Confessions of a Shopaholic

I saw this one a while back but was so underwhelmed I haven't gotten around to writing it up until now. Now it should be stated that I went into this knowing it was a chick flick and therefore fluff which is fine. I can be entertained by fluff, I mean I like cotton candy and what is more fluff then that?


Sadly I was not entertained by Confessions of a Shopaholic. Maybe I wasn't in the mood to watch a girl who has way to many material things complain about how hard her life is when the bill comes. Being a grown up sucks, welcome to the club now you better get some of those things returned. Anyway off my soapbox. This was not the reason I didn't enjoy the movie, that reason is because the whole movie seemed lumped together in a hurry. Plots points are brought up and then resolved in the next scene without any explanation of how they were resolved. The cast does an admirable job with the material provided but in the end they couldn't overcome the tired story lines and standard chick flick plot. I don't mind chick flicks, really I don't, but I do ask that they be good. This one was not anything special and can be enjoyed best with a good return policy, I suggest Redbox.

He's Just Not That Into You

Okay, it wasn't my favorite. I think some people would like it. I'm just not that into this movie. It isn't what you expect going into it. And I am someone who read the book previously so it might be partly that too. The book was funny. I just didn't think the movie was. Did I laugh? Yes, I think a couple times. But overall, it felt long and I felt like they didn't portray women in a good light whatsoever.

They made most of the girl leads look like dumb stalkers. And the men, insensitive jerks. It could have been better, and maybe that's why I am being so harsh. Plus the plot between Scarlett Johanson, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Connelly was entirely too depressing. Not to mention a lot of the other plot lines.

I would recommend red boxing this one. Don't waste eight dollars. Also go into it with low expectations and you might be pleasantly surprised. The highlight of the movie to me was seeing Ginnefer Goodwins outfits throughout the show.

Sleepless in Seattle

Re-watched this movie last night. I think most have seen it, but if you haven't and you like:

1- "Chick Flicks"

2- the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan duo (Joe v.s. the Volcano, and You've Got Mail)

3- sappy love

You will enjoy this movie. (favorite scene from the movie) It's rated PG, for some mild language.

The brief plot:

Sam Baldwin, a Chicago architect, has lost his wife. He and his young son Jonah move to Seattle to make a fresh start. On Christmas evening, Jonah calls into a national radio advice show and persuades his father to go on the air with him to talk about how much he misses his wife. Thousands of women around the country, touched by Sam's story, send him letters. One letter is from Annie Reed, a journalist from Baltimore, Maryland, engaged to a man named Walter (Bill Pullman) who feels that there is something missing. The supporting cast in this movie cracks me up. If you're in the mood for a love story, check this one out.

P.S. I Love You

Watch this one with a box of tissues. A FULL BOX! I am so grateful I didn't see this in the theatres, because I would have forgotten tissues, and I would have been a mess! It sounds funny, but I had to take breaks, because it was too much sometimes. And believe me, my husband was making fun of me. He kept saying "Why are you watching it!?" To which I replied, "Because it's good." And it was.

Based on a novel by the same name, and starring Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler, with a supporting cast including Kathy Bates, Harry Connick Jr., and Lisa Kudrow. Holly (Hillary Swank) is married to Gerry (Gerard Butler) who dies within the first ten minutes of the show, and the rest centers around her receiving letters he had written to her before he passed.

I think the reason why this was so hard to watch for me, was because I am married. I am sure it's sad for anyone, but I believe there is something slightly different in watching it when you think of your spouse in the place of Gerry. Plus I am an emotional girly sap. So the tears were a plenty.

If you feel like a good cry, and let's face it.. us girls sometimes do. This is the movie for you. It was very well acted and though some parts were slightly unbelievable, it was still great. Though it's mostly a drama, there are definite funny parts that will have you laughing out loud, through your tears of course.

Rent this one, but be prepared.

Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama is one that you have likely seen. It's a quintessential "chick flick". It's hard for a woman not to like it when it has all the ingredients for a good chick flick... A couple hot men.. cue Patrick Dempsey (better known to some as McDreamy) and Joshua Lucas (yum), throw in some humor, a couple tear jerking moments and voila, you've got yourself a chick flick.

This is just the type of movie to watch while you're curled up all snug with Ben and Jerry (two of my favorite men) If for some reason you missed this in 2002 (when it was released) go out and rent it. I watched it this weekend while I was sick and my husband was doing homework. I am sure he was glad I didn't make him watch it with me. But I would definitely recommend it to all the ladies.

A lot of great lines.. "Look at you, you have a baby!... in a bar." and "Well, you must be Jake's hot date. I'm Melanie, Jake's snotty Yankee bitch wife whom he refuses to divorce. " I would recommend this movie if you're in the mood for a chick flick.

For all you women out there, I pose a question.. who makes your heart all a flutter.. Dempsey or Lucas? For me it's Josh Lucas, his eyes make me melt.

No Reservations

I was at my parents house this past weekend and they had Redboxed (yup its a verb) No Reservations, so I thought I would give it a watch. Now like most movies of its kind the plot is about as predictable as a phone book, by that I mean you know what is coming next and will not be surprised by any of it.


But luckily for this movie it has a cast that manages to keep you intrigued even though you know what is going to happen. I have been a fan of Catherine Zeta-Jones since Entrapment and Aaron Eckhart plays a much different character here than he does in The Dark Knight but likable still the same. Then for good measure they throw in Abigail Breslin who made it big in Little Miss Sunshine and Signs and is the glue that holds all the characters together.


If you ever find yourself getting sucked into the Food Network you will most likely enjoy the cooking aspects of No Reservations. Sure the plot is shockingly predictable but in this case if it were anything else it would most likely leave a bad taste in your mouth. This is a good rental if the movie you went to the store for is all checked out and you want to see something new.

My Best Friend's Wedding

An oldie, but a goody. I can watch this movie again and again. So I did, last night while folding laundry. I don't think it's a secret (if you know me) that I am not a Cameron Diaz fan. But I love her in this movie. I used to love her when she first started getting big. (ie: The Mask and The Sweetest Thing) Every character in this movie is lovable, though dysfunctional.

If you want a good laugh I recommend this. For the scheming, the antics, the humor that Rupert Everett brings. You fall in love with Dermot Mulroney every time he gazes into Julia Roberts eyes. And the part where he takes the ring off of her hand when it gets stuck? I swoon every time.

This movie has parts that are completely unbelievable, but they pull it off. One of my favorite scenes from that movie is when everyone is singing at lunch. (Click here to refresh your memory) The whole table starts up and there is even a man with lobster claws in the back swaying. It's big, but it's funny. My all time favorite scene is when those kids are sucking the helium out of the balloons at the most serious part and they start serenading them. I still laugh whenever I think about it.

I cry in the last scene EVERY time I watch it. This movie has heart. I love it. One of my top chick flicks for sure. Perfect choice if you want to curl up, eat some ice cream, and laugh. I'm sure you've seen it, but if not rent it!

Well I have to agree with Caity on this one. I too can watch this movie over and over. All the scenes just bring a smile to my face. I especially love the scene in the ladies room of the ballpark where Julia and Cameron have it out and the women in the background that keeps calling out Kimmy. Ah, good times. And if this movie doesn't make you want to sing karaoke then none ever will. Watch it once and you will want to own it, I do. Yes that's right I own a chick flick, now you know my secret shame!

27 Dresses

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride? Even the premise is obvious. No way that the girl with the 27 bridesmaids dresses is going to meet a handsome man, and actually get married in this movie! (oops! I ruined it... oh, wait, no I didn't... even a seat belt could predict that!)

Rented this over the weekend. If you go into this movie not expecting much I think you will like it more than I did. I had people telling me they loved it, so I was expecting a classic chick flick, that I would be able to watch over and over. (ie: While You Were Sleeping, Return to Me, You've Got Mail, Notting Hill) I liked this movie okay.

I am getting a little sick of watching a movie and being able to predict every single thing. This movie was funny in parts. But nothing I would talk to people about later and quote it. I know that some are going to disagree with me. But I have to say. It was not my favorite. I liked it once, but will never watch it again.

Cast includes Katherine Heigl, Judy Greer, Ed Burns, Malin Akerman, and James Marsden. I wasn't liking James Marsden in other things, but since Enchanted and this movie, he is growing on me. I enjoyed him in this part.

The movie left me feeling a little blah, and unfulfilled. I do have to say that it entertained me, and it was a nice distraction from cleaning my house. I am just glad I rented it. I also feel like had I seen it before anyone had told me anything about it, I would have liked it a touch better.

Should you rent it? Yeah, why not? It's worth a rent, and it was fun to curl up in bed with. Just don't go in expecting anything original. I think most girls would like this movie, but the men better stay away. Bob watched it for a second and quickly stepped out of the room to play video games. (shocking)

Okay I admit that I saw this movie as well. 27 Dresses was one of the movies on my flight to Hawaii and I stopped watching after about 2 minutes. Now this can not all be blamed on the movie as it was also a horrible flight but I was not about to make it worse by watching this movie, so I turned to the trusty iPod.

Well a few weeks later I was home sick and remembered that those who had watched this on the flight said it was okay, not great, but okay. Well I was sick and wanted to watch something I hadn't seen so I went this route. I have to say that I went in with low expectations, like Caity said this movie was very predictable. I don't really have a problem with that as most movies these days seem like they were all written from Screenplays for Dummies. But the redeeming factor for me was the humor. I wasn't expecting the movie to be as funny as it was or maybe it was just the fact that I was sick. Either way I was pleasantly surprised that I did not hate the movie and it made me laugh out loud a few times, which is all I really wanted from the movie. I mean it's not like the plot was going to provide any surprises or suspense, but when does a chick flick?

All in all I agree with Caity that this movie is good for a rental, especially if you are just looking for something to pass a few hours and take your mind off things.
